We're Not Really Strangers
A card game about human connection, played across three levels: Perception, Connection, and Reflection.
How to Play (2 Players)
Set aside the Final Card for the end of the game. Sit facing one another with Level 1 cards face down. Stare deeply into each other's eyes — seriously, stare into each other's eyes. The first to blink draws first.
- Player A draws a card, Player B answers. Alternate back and forth until a minimum of 15 cards are played per level.
- Once 15+ cards have been played per round, feel free to advance to the next level.
- Keep a pile of used cards separate to avoid confusion.
- Option to answer the questions you ask your partner, and vice versa.
- You do not have to play with a stranger — play with any human(s) you wish!
How to Play (Multiplayer, up to 6)
Optimized for 2, but works with up to 6 people for an even stranger experience. Sit in a circle and place the game in the center.
- Set a pencil in the middle. If you draw a wildcard, spin the pencil once — the player the sharp end lands on performs the wildcard with you (spin-the-bottle style).
- Set a 'dig deeper' card on each side of the circle for anyone's use (once per level).
- First impressions: Before starting, write first impressions (3 sentences or less) of each player on a sheet of WNRS paper. Fold, exchange, and keep them anonymous. Read them aloud once the game is over. (Tip: rip a sheet into pieces to be eco-friendly.)
- Skip first-impressions questions in Level 1. If playing with friends, try to remember what your first impressions were. Ignore the 'Final Card' in a group setting.
- Person most hesitant to play draws first.
Level 1 (group): Each player reads a question aloud and every participant answers. Each player must read at least 2 question cards and answer every question posed to move on.
Level 2 (group): With the deck face down, each player draws a card. On your turn, read your question aloud and choose one player to answer — you may not select a player who just answered.
Level 3 (group): Played like Level 1. Ask a question that each player must answer about you.
Once Level 3 is complete, revisit the first-impression notes written at the beginning.
Card Explanations
- Final Card: When's the last time you received a handwritten note? Use the pencil and notepad to write your partner a note. Fold and exchange. Open only once you two have parted.
- Level 1 – Perception: Do you know how others see you? About gaining perspective on first impressions and challenging assumptions. Answer the first response that comes to mind; if guessed incorrectly, feel free to reveal the actual answer.
- Level 2 – Connection: Who are you really? Asking the rarely asked questions and connecting on a deeper level.
- Level 3 – Reflection: Time to reflect on your game experience.
- Dig Deeper Cards: Each player gets one, usable once per level, to encourage transparency if you feel your partner is holding back.
- Wildcards: If you draw one, your partner must complete the instructions unless otherwise stated. Spontaneous and a little silly — can appear at any moment. Some have a time limit, so have a phone handy. A "create your own question" wildcard means the holder makes their own question for the partner.
